Children’s Game #19: Haram Football

Mosul, Iraq, 2017; 9:11 min
In collaboration with Julien Devaux and Félix Blume

A street in golden evening light, lined with burnt-out cars and wrecked buildings. The East Bank of Mosul was liberated days ago; football is no longer haram, forbidden. The ball is lobbed into play. Except there is no ball. Re-enacting the trick they perfected under the rule of Islamic State, here is the beautiful game as mysterious dance. Was football haram because it resembles a religion?
